Samsung unveils 2021 Odyssey gaming monitor lineup with flat panels Leave a comment

Samsung today unveiled its 2021 series of Odyssey gaming monitors. The key feature this year seems to be the flat panels, or more specifically, the lack of curved panels as found on the 2020 series.

The new series features three models, the G70A, the G50A, and the G30A.

The G70A is the top of the line model with a 28-inch, 3840×2160 IPS panel that has a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz. The panel has peak brightness of 400 nits, with 300 nits typical brightness and it supports VESA DisplayHDR 400 standard. The G70A also features AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support and is Nvidia G-SYNC Compatible certified.

To support that combination of a high resolution and high refresh rate, the G70A comes with a single DisplayPort 1.4 port and dual HDMI 2.1 ports. The latter will allow connecting the latest generation consoles, such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, which require HDMI 2.1 for their 4K 120Hz output. Auto Source Switch+ lets the monitor automatically turn on and switch to the correct source when a connected device is turned on.

Next is the G50A. This model features a 27-inch, 2560×1440 resolution IPS panel with up to 165Hz refresh rate. It supports HDR10 and has typical brightness of 350 nits. The G50A supports FreeSync Premium and is also G-SYNC Compatible certified. Connections include a single DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 2.0.

Both the G70A and the G50A feature additional features, such as Picture-in-Picture and Picture-by-Picture, Low Input Lag Mode, Super Arena Gaming UX, Ultrawide Game View, and CoreSync Lighting. Both also advertise 1ms GTG response times.

Lastly, there’s the G30A. This model comes in two sizes — 27-inch and 24-inch — but in either case it’s a VA panel with a resolution of 1920×1080 and up to 144Hz refresh rate. There’s no HDR support and the maximum brightness is around 250 nits. The G30A supports FreeSync Premium but is not G-SYNC Compatible certified by Nvidia (doesn’t necessarily mean it wouldn’t work). Port selection is limited to a single DisplayPort 1.2 and a single HDMI 1.4.

All three monitors come in the same black color and feature a height adjustable stand with tilt, swivel, and pivot option.
